Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation established by Bill Gates and Melinda (the Microsoft founder) was the first recipient. The foundation focused on education and global health. Bill and Buffett had been in contact since the 1990s. Other charities that received donations included those run by Buffett's children as well as the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation named after his late wife. This foundation focused on women's reproductive health and helped fund college scholarships. In the year 2010, Buffett and Gates formulated the Giving Pledge. This pledge invited other wealthy individuals to donate a majority of their wealth to charitable causes.
